Assisi si allunga sulle pendici del Monte Subasio, al di sopra della pianura in cui scorrono il Topino e il Chiascio. Benché possa vantare un'origine di epoca romana, l'attuale aspetto di Assisi, tanto degli edifici quanto del tessuto urbano, è stato sicuramente determinato dallo sviluppo medioevale. Il nucleo più antico della cittadina è protetto da un apparato difensivo costituito da otto porte di accesso fortificate e da una lunga cinta muraria, ancora in ottimo stato di conservazione, che fa capo a due castelli: la Rocca Maggiore, ricostruita dal Cardinale Albornotz nel 1367 e la Rocca Minore.
Assisi, oltre agli edifici di culto di così grande importanza da non poter essere considerati suo patrimonio esclusivo, come San Francesco, il turista potrà visitare anche le chiese di Santa Chiara e di San Pietro. La prima eretta in forme gotiche fra il 1257 e il 1265, la seconda di poco più antica, decorata da un elegante portale mediano e tre rosoni. Il Duomo, dedicato al patrono San Rufino, mantiene inalterata una splendida facciata con sculture e rilievi; l'interno, invece, ha subito nei secoli interventi di ricostruzione che ne hanno stravolto l'impianto originario del XIII secolo.
Sulla Piazza del Comune di Assisi, posta sull'antica area del foro, troviamo il Palazzo dei Priori del 1337, il duecentesco Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo e il tempio di Minerva, costruito durante il periodo augusteo con pronao, colonne e capitelli corinzi ancora intatti. Nelle vicinanze sono visitabili i luoghi legati alla vita di San Francesco, come l'Eremo delle Carceri, immerso in un fitto bosco di querce e lecci sulle pendici del Subasio e il Convento di San Damiano, sorto intorno all'oratorio nel quale la tradizione vuole che il Crocifisso abbia parlato al Santo. Nella pianura, infine, l'imponente basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli è stata costruita su progetto dell'Alessi fra il 1569 e il 1679 per proteggere la Cappella della Porziuncola, il povero ritrovo dei primi frati francescani.
Tutti coloro che avranno la fortuna di visitare questa splendida cittadina dovranno convenire con chi ritiene che la sua bellezza vada al di là di un breve e, per forza di cose, incompleto elenco di opere più o meno straordinarie, essendo invece da ricercarsi nell'atmosfera dei luoghi che la storia e la fede di un Santo hanno reso unici nel mondo.
